Theo Poulos Real Estate Pty. Ltd. As a tourist destination, the Blue Mountains was at its peak between the World Wars. There were in excess of 12000 accommodation beds available during the period. Australia's premier holiday resort had much to offer. Apart from the natural beauty, the mountain air, bush walking through rain forests, the flora and fauna of the vast National Parks and cascading waterfalls you could relax by huge log fires at twilight, sit down to "silver service and starched tablecloths" for dinner while listening to the piano or chamber group provide the Mozart and later dance to the Palm court orchestra. Much of this was lost due to the increase in popularity of the motor car between the 1950's and 1970's, accommodation beds fell to less than 2000. However, with the resurgence of the domestic tourist market together with a massive influx of international tourists, great interest is now being shown in the area. The Blue Mountains is once again becoming a favourite holiday destination for many Australians. With longer annual holidays and an increasing desire to vary their destinations, many are realising that there are alternatives to the beach side holiday. The proximity to the 3.5 million Sydney residents provides an excellent source of annual holiday makers as well as those searching for the elusive weekend retreat. International tourists are visiting the area at a dramatically increasing rate, while the few current convention facilities are permanently booked out. |
